Maintenance And Causes Of Failure Of Rocker Arm.

A rocker arm shown above, in the context of an internal combustion engine of automotive, marine, motorcycle and reciprocating aviation types is an oscillating lever that conveys radial movement from the cam lobe into linear movement at the poppet valve to open it.

Rocker arms are typically located between the push-rod and intake and exhaust valves. They are pushed and pulled by push-rods to “rock” up and down, opening and closing the exhaust valve and intake valve of the combustion chamber on engines with a camshaft below the engine.

With broken or loose rocker arms, the exhaust valves and intake valves can't function correctly and the cylinder associated with the faulty rocker arm will be disabled. This will ultimately limit the performance of your engine and your ability to drive the car smoothly and safely.

Common Symptoms of a Bad Rocker Arm

1 - Unusual Noises :-

Sound like a rapid clicking or ticking, similar to a sewing machine.

(if you have to experience what actually it sounds, check this link on youtube  https://youtu.be/EC4ICbhqO6U )

2 - Weak Engine Performance or Stalling :

If the vehicle’s faulty rocker arm is getting in the way of this process, you’ll notice decreased power and poor acceleration

3 - Check Engine Light On :

Your vehicle will recognize weak engine performance

as well, and will warn you by illuminating the check engine

light. You must not ignore this indication.

Its very cheap to change the rocker arm rather than changing the whole engine or an other parts of the vehicle engine. It costs almost Rs.70~100 depending upon the type of your vehicle and size of rocker.

Cause of failure:

Due to fluctuating loads applied while running the vehicle, any defects in the manufacturing process will expose the rocker arm to cause fatigue failure. In order to counter the possibility of fatigue failure, most of the rocker arms are manufactured through forging process, which improve strength and reduces defects occurred in the manufacturing process. However, in certain cases, failure of rocker arms still occurs due to uneconomical way of driving conditions, such as:

1) Over revving the engine to show off which is too common now a days,

2) Taking your vehicle to off road while it is mainly manufactured for urban and daily usage. This is more popular in rural areas where most of the companies try to build their vehicles to sustain the extreme conditions of roads even the slippery and muddy monsoon season.

3) Not taking proper care and regular servicing of the vehicle on time or when needed, which may lead to damage many other parts of the vehicle.
